Most people have a form of gum disease but they don’t know it!  Unfortunately, it is a major form of tooth loss in adults, but because the symptoms are not always obvious and there may not be any pain, the impending problem gets ignored by patients.

The progression of the disease can be very slow and if good oral hygiene is practised, can it can be slowed down to a rate that allows you to keep most of your teeth all of your life.

Lets get technical for a moment.  There are 2 types of gum disease:

  1. Gingivitus and it means ‘inflammation of the gums’.  The gums around teeth get red and swollen and may bleed when brushed.
  2. Periodontal disease occurs after a long standing case of above.  There are a number of types but they all affect the tissues holding the teeth.  Eventually the bone holding the teeth reduces, teeth become loose and eventually fall out

Patients are often surprised/disappointed and even a little angry when the results of gum disease become evident to them.  Usually their dentist has been telling them for decades of their gum disease issues!  Just because you can’t see it, ask yourself, ‘What am I going to do about MY OWN oral health!
